A Decade of Impact through America’s Warrior Partnership
For over a decade, America’s Warrior Partnership (AWP) has been at the forefront of addressing mental wellness challenges for veterans. Their holistic and proactive approach exemplifies a deep commitment to supporting those who have served, tackling issues with innovative initiatives, and unwavering dedication.
Through its network of social workers, trusted partnerships, and groundbreaking research, AWP has proven that suicide prevention is not a stand-alone program. It is the culmination of comprehensive support that begins long before a crisis occurs.
A Decade of Support and Success
Since its inception, AWP has assisted over 60,000 veterans, handling 160,000 individual cases. In 2023 alone, AWP served more than 8,000 veterans and their families across 1,300 counties, covering all 50 states and territories. What sets AWP apart is its commitment to not only addressing veterans’ mental health but also their broader needs—whether it’s securing benefits, finding housing, or accessing food security. This comprehensive approach led to an impressive 89% of cases being successfully resolved, and 95% customer satisfaction.
“At AWP, suicide prevention is not a stand-alone program,” says AWP President and CEO Jim Lorraine. “But rather the outcome of best-in-class service, collaboration, care, compassion, and productive partnerships that begin with a trusted, meaningful relationship.”
AWP is actively expanding its local and national partnerships, with over 2,000 organizations currently collaborating within The AWP Network. Alongside these partnerships, AWP is leading the multi-year veteran suicide study, Operation Deep Dive™.
AWP’s innovative programs are deeply rooted in building these trusted relationships, ensuring that veterans receive the care they need before reaching a breaking point. Lorraine’s words highlight the organization’s belief that mental health struggles are often the result of numerous compounding factors—and addressing them requires looking at the full picture of a veteran’s life.
Proactive Solutions: AWP’s Holistic Approach to Suicide Prevention
One of the most striking statistics from AWP’s work comes from the veterans supported through the Staff Sergeant Parker Gordon Fox Suicide Prevention Grant Program (SSG Fox SPGP), which provides funding for veterans in need. Of the 225 veterans assisted, 21% expressed suicidal ideations, yet none of them had initially sought out mental health support. This speaks to the broader issue that many veterans may not initially recognize their mental health challenges or may feel unable to ask for help.
AWP’s social workers, who man a 24/7 support line, specialize in connecting veterans and their families with a range of services that go far beyond mental health care. From helping veterans navigate the often complex VA system to ensuring their basic needs are met, AWP is working to build a safety net that addresses every aspect of a veteran’s life. The AWP Network operates as the central hub for veterans seeking to improve their quality of life, no matter the challenge.
Operation Deep Dive™: Research and Impact
In addition to their hands-on work, AWP has made significant strides in veteran suicide research. Their multi-year study, Operation Deep Dive™, is designed to uncover the root causes of suicide among former service members. Originally conducted in partnership with the University of Alabama, the study has now transitioned to Duke University and is expanding to include additional states. With a report expected by the end of 2024, Operation Deep Dive™ is shaping up to be one of the most comprehensive studies ever conducted on veteran suicide.
AWP is actively seeking participants for this vital research. Family members, friends, and co-workers of veterans who have died by suicide or self-injury are encouraged to share their stories. By participating, these individuals can contribute to a broader understanding of how to prevent future tragedies and preserve the lives of those who have served.
Participants must be a relative, loved one, friend, or co-worker of a former service member who has died by suicide or self-injury within the last 24 months and over the age of 18.
For more information on how to participate, AWP asks that individuals contact Krystal Garcia at kgarcia@americaswarriorpartnership.org or 706-386-2431.
Veteran Success Story: David Charbonnet
One veteran success story exemplifies AWP’s impact beyond crisis intervention. David Charbonnet, a former Navy SEAL, experienced a life-altering injury during a civilian training jump that left him paralyzed from the waist down. Despite this, David’s determination never faltered. During his recovery, he discovered adaptive sports, specifically paracanoe, which reignited his competitive spirit.
AWP played a pivotal role in David’s journey by securing funding for his paracanoe coaching, allowing him to pursue his dream of competing in the 2024 ICF Paracanoe World Championships. Although he didn’t secure a spot on the 2024 USA Paralympic Team, David remains focused on his goal of qualifying for the 2028 USA Paralympics. His story is a powerful reminder of the resilience of veterans and the critical role that organizations like AWP play in supporting them through both physical and emotional challenges.
