In 1975, I was stationed at FT Carson Co and managed to impress enough retired General Officers to win The Outstanding Military Man of the Pikes Peak Area for E-3 (Price First Class). This distinction also allowed me to be the Ft Carson representative to attend the grand opening of the Hale Kola hole for active duty and retired US military members. The Hale Kola was right on the beach. General Greer hosted a party honoring us enlisted attendees from all branches of our military including the Coast Guard. Jack Lord attended and I have photos of him and I. Mr Lord wrote on a hotel napkin a note to Grandpa Frank and how they served together at Camp Grant Illinois (fiction but Steve McGarret was amused at this suggestion). Finally I was fortunate enough to also be one of the Honor Guards on TBY (temporary duty) for 106 days abroad the Bicentennial American Freedom Train. My overall experience in the military was unbelievable!
