Fewer than 1% of Americans currently serve in the military, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. The Wall Street Journal reports that of the estimated 17.4 million veterans in the U.S., 80% report having an immediate family member who served, and, despite two decades of conflict in the global war on terror, a recent Mission Roll Call national poll found that 67% of Generation Z does not know a veteran.
