Can vets restore American unity?

Extreme partisanship has corroded our national politics, and public confidence in governmental institutions has suffered as a result. According to a 2023 American Values Survey, about nine out of 10 members of both major parties believe that a victory by the other side in next year’s presidential election would pose a threat to democracy. This extreme and pessimistic viewpoint is troubling, but veterans across the country can be influential toward restoring confidence and integrity into the most foundational institutions of our democracy.

 

Americans from all different backgrounds join the armed forces with a shared commitment to defend and protect the constitution and our national institutions. Regardless of socioeconomic status, political views, upbringing or race, service members are bound together through shared adversity and common goals from the moment they arrive at boot camp to the day they get out. It is the essential “Esprit de Corps” that sheds our preconceived notions and biases, forcing us to work as a team. Without the ability to look beyond our differences, our military would crumble. Our government leaders from both sides of the aisle would do well to emulate this mentality.

 

Veterans are a valuable resource in the public sector, yet the number of vets in elected positions has declined since 2001. In 1969, 75% of members of Congress had served in the military. Today, it is only 18%.
