The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) is touting a dramatic improvement in disability claims processing under President Donald Trump.

According to a new VA release this week, the agency is experiencing record-low backlogs, leading to billions of dollars in benefits reaching veterans more quickly than in previous years.

“Putting Veterans first means making VA benefits faster, better and more convenient, and under President Trump, that’s exactly what we’re doing” VA Secretary Doug Collins said in a statement.

But while some veterans groups agree that the system is moving faster, there are still some concerns when it comes to the quality and consistency of disability ratings.

Jim Lorraine, the president and CEO of America’s Warrior Partnership, told The National News Desk that the current VA is “light years ahead of where it was in previous years.”

“But can it be better?” he asked. “I think any government bureaucracy can be better.”

VA disability compensation is a critical source of financial support for millions of veterans living with injuries and illnesses related to their time of service.

Long wait times and claim backlogs have been recurring complaints for years.

Trump Administration Says VA Disability Claims Are Moving Faster

The VA announced this week that it has processed more than 3 million disability benefits claims in fiscal year 2026, surpassing the previous record set in fiscal 2025. The agency also said it has awarded more than $207 billion in compensation and pension benefits to veterans and survivors this fiscal year.

According to VA data, the average time to complete a disability claim decision has fallen from about 141.5 days in January 2025 to 75.6 days in September 2026, while the backlog of pending benefits claims has dropped by more than 70 percent.

Claims processing accuracy has also reportedly improved to approximately 94 percent, the highest level in two years.

“The benchmarks VA is achieving today are certainly to be commended, but they are the culmination of years of modernization efforts and efficiencies,” Veterans of Foreign Wars Washington office executive director Ryan Gallucci told Newsweek.

Only a decade ago, VA’s claims process was still largely paper-based, Gallucci said.

“In terms of government, VA has adopted technology very quickly to simplify this work, including using automation for back-end objective processes, relying on clinical information to cut down on unnecessary exams, and even modernizing the rating schedule itself to be more objective. This has cut weeks off development times,” Gallucci added.

VA Health Care Expansion Under Trump

The administration said the disability claims improvements are part of their larger efforts to expand veterans’ access to care.

Under Trump, VA officials say the department has:

• Enrolled more than 270,000 new veterans in VA health care during 2026.
• Opened 41 new VA health-care facilities since January 2025.
• Expanded appointment availability outside normal business hours.
• Continued increasing community-care appointments for veterans seeking treatment outside VA facilities.

“The VA’s progress in streamlining veterans’ benefits processing is a step in the right direction for our nation’s veterans,” Jim Whaley, CEO of nonprofit veteran advocacy group Mission Roll Call, told Newsweek. “There is always more work to do, but cutting through red tape and delivering faster results can make a meaningful difference for veterans who have earned these benefits and care.”
