The National Desk: 523 troops died by suicide last year; rise shows need to ‘redouble’ prevention efforts

(The National Desk)More American military members died by suicide last year than the year before, with a 9% increase in the total force suicide rate.

report released Thursday by the Department of Defense showed 523 service members, including 363 on active duty, died by suicide in 2023, up from 493 the year before.

Active component suicide rates have gradually increased since 2011, including a 12% increase last year.

“The findings urgently demonstrate the need for the Department to redouble its work in the complex fields of suicide prevention and postvention,” Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin said in a statement.
