(Inc., July 25) On National Hire a Veteran Day, former service members turned business leaders say companies could thrive hiring by applicants with military backgrounds.

We could have a white Christmas in July if someone gives a job to a general.

It’s been 71 years since the holiday movie classic White Christmas hit the silver screen, treating 1954 audiences to the song “What Do You Do With a General?” Today, U.S. veterans are still having trouble landing employment after their service.

More than half of veterans are currently struggling with unemployment, according to the Department of Labor’s latest data. A separate study by Mission Roll Call — a nonprofit that supports former military personnel — shows 62 percent of veteran families have the same struggle.

But it doesn’t have to be that way. Friday is National Hire a Veteran Day, and Jim Whaley, a 20-year Army veteran and CEO of Mission Roll Call, is challenging companies to rethink their recruitment process to include more former military personnel. Companies interested in ramping up their hiring of veterans can speak with organizations like Mission Roll Call or Hire A Vet, to connect with job-seeking veterans, he said. He believes companies will be surprised by just how transferable military skills are into the corporate world.
