8 Resources Every Veteran Should Have Saved in Their Phone
You don’t have to be in crisis to use these. Some are for the hard days. Some are for the in-between days, when you’re not okay, but you’re not sure you’re allowed to say that either. All of them are free, confidential, and built with veterans in mind.
Save them now. Share them with someone who might need them.
1. Veterans Crisis Line: Dial 988, Press 1
This is the one to have memorized rather than saved. The Veterans Crisis Line offers 24/7 confidential support for veterans and their family members, and you don’t have to be enrolled in VA benefits to use it. Call 988 and press 1, or text 838255. You can also chat online at VeteransCrisisLine.net. Trained responders, many of them veterans themselves, are on the other end.
2. PTSD Coach App (Free)
Developed by the VA, PTSD Coach is designed specifically for veterans coping with post-traumatic stress. The app offers self-assessment tools, education about PTSD, symptom management techniques, and resources for finding professional help. It’s one of the most practical tools out there because you can use it at 2 a.m. without calling anyone. It is available on Google Play and the Apple App Store.
3. Mindfulness Coach App (Free)
From the same VA team that built PTSD Coach, Mindfulness Coach helps veterans learn and practice mindfulness meditation, with guided exercises, progress tracking, and personalized plans developed with input from veterans and mental health experts. Even five minutes a day makes a difference. Available on iOS and Android.
4. Military OneSource: 800-342-9647
Military OneSource is a free service that provides expert support to connect military personnel and their families with the best available resources to fit their needs, available anytime by phone or online. 6. WWP Talk (Wounded Warrior Project)
Not ready to talk to a therapist? Start here. WWP Talk is a service of the Wounded Warrior Project that offers free, weekly 20-minute phone calls with a nonjudgmental listener. Sometimes you just need someone to pick up the phone. Sign up at WoundedWarriorProject.org.
7. Innerworld App (Free for Veterans)
Innerworld is a free app that lets veterans create an anonymous avatar and join a community with over 200 weekly events, ranging from educational mental health sessions to social activities, including specialized Veterans Support Groups. If walking into a support group feels like too much, walking in as an avatar might be the right first step. Download it at Innerworld.io.
8. Give an Hour
Give an Hour connects veterans and military service members with one-on-one counseling and peer support. Their network of volunteer mental health professionals provides free care to those who need it most. Find a provider at GiveAnHour.org.
This list is just a starting point. The veteran community has more resources than most people realize, and finding the right fit can take some exploration.
